Edward Paul Giles, a graduate of Cambridge University, founded the school in 1966. The aim was to provide a British education for the international community in Barcelona. Starting with a small group of secondary level pupils and preparing them for the 'O' and 'A' levels of the GCE (General Certificate of Education). The school opened a primary department in 1968. It grew gradually to its present size of 220-230 pupils between the ages of four and eighteen years.

The school is not selective: it aims to provide a sound education for all pupils, regardless
of different backgrounds, nationalities, levels of achievement or ability.  A placement examination, however,  may be required.

The school is noted for its outstanding results in the GCSE and GCE 'A' level examinations. Success in these can provide the qualifications necessary to proceed on to university in the UK, the USA, or to the student's own country of origin.
Pupils from Kensington therefore have a wide choice when it comes to making decisions on further education.

The staff have all obtained their qualifications and previous experience in the U.K. — except for the French and Spanish teachers, who are native speakers and give classes in their own language — so that the current system of education in Britain can be followed in both the Junior and Senior Schools. The selection of high-calibre staff is a meticulous process and turnover is extremely low, with several teachers being in office for more than 10 years.

The school has been in two previous locations but moved to its present, purpose-built premises in 1988. The new building was formally opened by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in October of that year and is within the main residential area of the city.

The school treats pupils very much as individuals; they should be happy with their school, with themselves and with their achievements. There is a School uniform and students are expected to fulfil their academic obligations.

Most pupils are sons and daughters of business people, consular or diplomatic officials of various countries, or executive personnel of multi-national firms.

The school encourages a friendly atmosphere and promotes a common sense approach to behaviour and
learning, thereby stimulating motivation for study. The aim is to achieve a high level of understanding, independent reasoning and cooperation between staff and pupils. Personal attention and extra assistance are always available.
